If you have not heard of the “fun, authentic, empowering” girl group, SZNS that are “everything you need” where have you been?! One of the major features of this talented girl group is that their music is very relatable to women as their songs ‘Tequila w Lime’ and ‘Behave’ are focused on women empowerment, and “what it is like to leave the house as a woman”. All of their songs have a sense of women empowerment and because they can relate to each other and others can relate to them this further enriches the meaning “as women we go through a lot of the same things just in different ways”. We asked them what other than this inspires their music and they told us that their latest single, ‘Build a Boy’ is more about heartbreak.
One of the members of SZNS said that for her this single was about “learning to be on her own after her first ever breakup” also “accepting that there will never be a perfect person”. When we asked the girls what their creative process looked like when writing music, Winter answered saying that “it differs every time, but Autumn normally has a great answer to this question” but sadly she had lost her voice on the day of this interview, “so I'm going to do my best to answer it like Autumn” earning laughs from the whole call. “We walk into the studio sometimes having an idea, sometimes having a concept and start with that, then producers and writers will help with what they think will work or be cool and then they will get a song out of it”. Summer added in that one-way the writing can happen is that someone will come in and be like “I just came off the phone with my ex-boyfriend and he said this and this”. They are 4 best friends so writing sessions “are really just them talking about what is going on in their lives and it somehow just flows into a song!”. One thing the ‘Behave’ singers said they would change about the music industry would be to see more females in music: producers, directors, writers, everything! “A bunch more women in power makes for a safer community for female artists”. Summer voiced her frustration how she feels that “girl groups should be taken more seriously too as when I say “oh I'm in a girl group” they’re like “oh cute” but you wouldn’t say “oh cute” to some dude in a rock band or a rapper!”. Winter stated that they are not a gimmick they are “four strong women who stand for something, work very well together and individually”. Also, that people try to put them against each other, Autumn adding that people are shocked when they find out they write their own songs. They came up with the name SZNS, however the concept of each of them being named after a season was given to them whereas before they were going to be named ‘four seasons’ which turned into ‘seasons’ which ended up as ‘SZNS’, the name it is now which they believe is “more edgy and fun”. The goal for the end of this year is to perform live “in as many venues as we can”, as in America everything is set to be open in June. What was their biggest challenge disregarding Covid as an obvious answer? One band member said that finding their sound was difficult, as they did not know each other before and had their own ideas of what music was going to sound like yet, now they are at a place where they are looking forward to being able to perform live together. Their proudest moment together beside having their billboard in Times Square, Winter said apart from that it would be their ‘Build a Boy’ music video which was not released at the time of the interview yet is out now on their YouTube channel.
Now by the time of filming for the ‘Build a Boy’ music video they were more in sync with each other, and even having an in-joke saying they are “all one brain cell”. In five years, they wish to be performing in stadiums or even maybe a cool documentary as Winter loves watching other artists’ documentaries. We asked them who would be their dream collaboration, Summer replied with “Blackpink! Or any other girl group because that many women in the studio would be so cool and we'd be unstoppable!”; others said “Megan thee Stallion or Cardi B, like a Spanish sounding song with Cardi B”. Each member of the “Tequila w Lime” singing band has very unique styles and choice in clothes. We wondered if this would lead to their sound changing in the future. “I don’t know but I’m excited to find out!” Summer said, she can “see a really big hyper pop moment for them”. They all grew up in different places and with different music backgrounds so they explained they would love to do specific albums for each member and their individual sounds. Each girl has their own style, Spring said that she is going for more of a street style, like everything bodycon and tight with accessories such as air forces and hoops stating “that's me!”. Autumn said that she wants to look like “John B from Outer Banks had a kid with Kim Possible”. Winter having more of a classy street look, loves a baggier fit but with the hair slicked back to make her look still put together. Summer loves trying new things and loves taking inspiration from all over the place, calling us from San Francisco she sees people walk pass. Also loves to mix really feminine styles with masculine styles “if I wanna dress like the girliest girl one day I will do it, if I want to dress like a boy one day, I will do it!” Which we love! We asked them who they would say the most fashionable member in the group was Winter confidently stated “Summer or Spring”. Summer saying that she is the one most indulged by the fashion world and she just loves it but not forgetting to hype up her other band mates saying they all have amazing styles! Spring has been diving in lately as she is liking to pair together pieces like camo pants and a cheater shirt but she is making it work, as they all were electric colours that is igniting her soul “there are no rules to fashion”. Winter said that her style has definitely grown a lot since being in the band especially when they were in New York and same with Summer, she was seeing many people walk past and was like “WOW!” so she has been hit by the fashion bug, and now she needs a whole new wardrobe!
On the topic of fashion, we were keen to ask them about their swim suit line which will be out soon, and wondered if fashion was something they always wanted to pursue –a resounding chorus of “Definitely‘s”. Spring told us that she previously had a connection to bikinis as she in fact was a bikini model from 15-17 and so she always wanted to make her own line and now in the band she has been given the chance to do this with three other women with such unique styles, and that is amazing. Sadly, we are coming to an end of our amazing chat with the talented girls from SZNS, we asked them for a message they would like to give to their fans. And as we are all fans by now here it is, “to be fearless and go for what you want no matter how big or how scary, you have one life, no opinion matters but yourself, and to never give up if you really want something”.
