We were lucky enough to speak to the rising artist, SCARLET. She is an independent artist who writes, produces, mixes and masters all of her own music in her bedroom; She works with her friends on the visuals and music videos and her band is all her friends from when they went to college together. She tells us that, “I'm yet to be established within the industry, but I've been performing, playing and making music since I was a lil bubba and I can't imagine myself doing anything else.”
SCARLET would say that lots of different things inspire her music but when she’s actually sitting down at her laptop making shit, she would write from life experiences. She would say she tends to “look through my journal and see what I've been feeling or thinking about recently or what's actually been happening in my life and I take phrases from those entries and make a song from it.”
Her biggest music idols would include Wolf Alice, Lealani, OTTO and Beach House. “To be honest, I'd say the one of the artists I always go back to when I'm struggling with writing and need a bit of grounding is The 1975: I've always been so inspired by their lyrics, I don't know what it is, like they're really nothing special but I love how simple it is, yet they are able to paint such a clear picture through their storytelling - specifically in their self-titled album.”
In five words SCARLET would describe her music as, “I Don't Really Know But-It’s-Good”. And we couldn’t think of a better description!
SCARLET’s goals for what is left of this year, would be “to perform as many more gigs as physically possible”, now that she’s done one for the first time since Covid started, “I can't stop!!!!”. She states she would like to potentially release another song and music video! When we asked her what the biggest challenge of her career was so far, she replied with, “My career hasn't even started yet I'd say lol, but for the question, I'd say Covid. It prevented me from achieving a lot of potential opportunities as well as having a year+ long break from performing”. Yet she would also say Covid has been a blessing in disguise as it allowed her to really sit down and figure out her sound.
If SCARLET could collaborate with any artist in the whole world, she would collaborate with “Frank Ocean. No explanation needed.”
SCARLET hopes to see herself in five years, “Hopefully gigging”, which is lovely “making music full time and actually making enough money to live off from it.”
The music video for her song ‘Synthetic Devotion’ is a masterpiece and we wondered how they come up with the vision for it! SCARLET told us that she, “just wanted the music video to visually convey the feelings and experiences of what the song is actually about and I think the use of the 360 GoPro really allowed that to happen. A lot of mood boards were created and a lot of different people worked on it, I changed from person to person because I didn't feel that they completely got my vision and so on, until I finally got Izzy to work on it with me and she got Milo on it and boom, the dream team!!” Definitely give it a listen and watch if you haven't already! Since, when we asked SCARLET what one song, she would play on repeat would be she replied with, “Synthetic Devotion, duh...!” And what a perfect way to end the interview, thank you to Scarlett for chatting to us. Everyone watch out for her next releases!
