Over the weekend we had a lovely opportunity to speak to the upcoming independent female artist Roisin McCarney, and got an insight of her creative process and what it’s like being an independent artist.
Roisin has always loved and “just done music” since she was little. When she was four or 5 she had a small portable cd player and a little suitcase filled with CDs that she used to carry on holidays, so she’s always been ‘involved’ with music and listening to music, so she knew that it was always something that she wanted to do from a young age. As for inspiration each of her songs are quite different and one was even made up from reality TV show while others being very personal song writing like her most recent song ‘Night Show’. A song writing camp with others made some songs from a theme but that's not always possible, like obviously at the moment, with Covid ruining most of our plans. Whilst one of her many idols is Miley Cyrus, she wouldn't want to be her! She also added that she’s ‘just a pop fanatic’ so Little Mix is another one of her many idols. When asked for five words to describe the music, she responded that this was “a tough question” as her music is changing right now but, in the end, settled with chilled, easy listening and dance, so it’s safe to assume that it's just a bit of everything.
The singer claimed that she's been delighted with the overall response to her music especially in Covid times and getting social media feedback is great; especially via tiktok, where she goes live a lot of the times, as that just tells you how it is and many people seems to really love her song ‘Night Show’. Many fans will be thrilled to know that Roisin is now working on a quite “dancy song” at the moment, which hasn’t got a title yet, but some snippets of it have been released on tiktok as a tease. Watch out for this “happy dancy” song as it’s to be released very soon! In terms of her music career the goal for this year is to keep making and improving her music and producing skills. When asked about the biggest challenge she’s faced in her career so far she said that it’d certainly be producing her own songs due to budgetary constricts at the moment and with self producing it’s not always easy to get the perfect quality that she would like. On a brighter note the proudest moment, undoubtedly was getting radio plays and especially when they chose to play the song more than once, and both her song ‘Fighting’ and ‘Night Show’ have been added to different radio’s playlists!! An advice that she might give to her younger self would be to “just go for it, have confidence” especially as you are often your best and worst critic. When you get feedback it's great especially to get validation. For example when ‘Night Show’ got a thousand plays in a month-that was great validation for that song and her work. In five years time s-he hopes to still be in the music industry, writing her own songs and writing for other people, playing venues perhaps Barrowland in Scotland and other venues around the UK. Discussing herself as an independent female artist she mentioned her previous vocation as a lighting technician and very much used to being in a male dominated profession and therefore used to having to prove herself and having self-confidence. She explains that with the stage she’s at right now, the experience would be similar to a guy, however once you get higher in the industry the difference could be more prominent. But this only gives you more ambition and determination. When asked bout her creative process and how a song comes to life she answered that her creative process usually starts on the piano and with the book that she always keeps near to drop down ideas and lyrics, some ideas are completely random and don't make any sense at all, but other times those ideas turn into her smashing songs. Then comes the chords and the process and progress begins from there. As for how the music industry could progress it would be that it didn't cost so much to be able to promote yourself although now social media platforms like TikTok certainly helps independent artists.
Thank you to Roisin again for a lovely interview, keep streaming her latest song ‘Night Show’ and stay tuned for more content to come.
