OVERPASS INTERVIEW {ISSUE #4}

Updated: Sep 17, 2024

We were lucky enough to speak to Elliot, Indie, Joe, and Max all members of up-and-coming band, Overpass. With the band only forming on Boxing Day 2019, they already have a great chemistry and mix of characters. Max remembered being inspired by a gig he went to at the O2 3 room and later messaged Indie saying that “we should get something going”. After Max put something on his story, with Joe and Elliot both replying, they had their first rehearsal in January 2020. It started off as a “fun thing t-o do with friends”, playing Arctic Mon-keys covers, and later on discovering “we have to be in a band”!! With the band just starting out, the-y are fully appreciative and respectful of the Covid pandemic and lockdown has certainly been the big-gest challenge to date as rehearsals are “up in the air” and don’t want to go out and “catch it just cause you want to rehearse”. The pandemic being their biggest challenge so far with the balance of “being safe but not wanting to lose what their working towards”. They describe the feeling of getting a gig booked and being really excited and then the country going in to lockdown again. Indie told us that the “momentum is still going up whereas I think if we’d been around for years and Covid hit it’d be more of a disappointment, whereas now we're still really excited for everything!”. They would all love to do a headlines gig, as they did have one booked but “they have to be realistic and have to bide their time to when it is safe to go on again”. During the interview with Overpass, we asked them what words would they describe their band as. “Dynamic” with “none of us are the same, each bringing a different type of edge” Max said. “Energetic” and this certainly came through during the whole interview as they bounce off each other and you can see why their growing number of followers take to them as a group. Indie described the band as “youthful” with them bringing “new twists to the genre which has been around for a long time”. With each of the band members coming up with one word Joe described them as “decent” which earned a laugh from everyone on the call, showing their banter. Whilst there was a general appreciation of Arctic Monkeys as a band that inspires them, they all have different genres that appeal and they do feel that like Arctic Monkeys, Overpass will need to evolve as their style of music will change naturally over the years with the general feel and vibe of the band at the time and they will not be afraid to experiment. Their music evolving as they do, “to mix it up and keep it up and keep things fresh”. For example, the Arctic Monkeys’ first album having a completely different sound to the most recent, experimental album ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino’. When asked about their creative process when making a song Max said songs come from a melody in his head, then he transfers to the guitar and whilst he then mumbles a few words, the other band members then have an influence into the final song and lyrics. Their first release “One Night Lover” has had an amazing response from streaming on Spotify having “26k streams”, “28k get it right!” the band joked around. The DMs they've received from the growing Instagram followers were very positive and which is now past 3,000, meaning one of Indie’s goals she set for 2021 has been achieved already!! We all look forward to their next releases. Whilst they thought collaboration with other bands or artists wasn't something, they initially expected to do. The band saying “dunno if we could collaborate with someone, think we’d be a nightmare!” Yet, they certainly have a great deal of respect for a Dublin band called Inhaler and would quite like to support them on any tour. Over to you Inhaler! We asked them where they’d see themselves in 5 years, we got a mix of responses from the humorous “Glastonbury, no!” one jokes, “down some alley, know what I mean”, “One song out in the next four years I reckon!”. Anyways... “released a lot of music hopefully”. Their aesthetic, whilst they describe as very much a work in progress, they do want to be themselves, so this is gro-

wing naturally and certainly don't want a manufactured look. Joe makes the most effort with buying a pink suit and white Cuban dazzled heels for the first gig but sadly he had to send them back because they were too big. Indie said that Joe has the most “Bold” style comparing him to Harry Styles, and his bold suits yet “still making it look good”. Band member, Indie, has good style wearing a lot of vintage pieces. Max having the worst he said, “I have the worse style” apparently wearing tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie everywhere. Whilst the name Overpass simply came from throwing a few names around in the WhatsApp group chat, when Max said “The Overpass” then it evolving to just, simply “Overpass”, this having a more “fresh and aesthetic” look. They're very happy with the name and this is a band that seem to have a great connection with each other and certainly the interview was quite a laugh and we are sure together they will grow and grow.
