A while back we had the wonderful opportunity to talk to James The Seventh and get an insight on her music career. When asked about how she got into music she explained to us that he previously was a dancer, however due to a surgery she couldn’t dance anymore. At the time her father bought her a guitar at the start of lockdown, so it was a very independent process and only due to this misfortune that she really started to be really into music and thanks her father’s friend for teaching her guitar. Her biggest music idol would have to be Marina (Marina and the diamonds) as she used to watch her a lot and loves her lyricism and the way she writes her songs. James told us that she’s generally inspired by what’s going on in her head at the moment, especially with the Covid restrictions there’s not much else going on and therefore she gets those inner-conversations inspiring herself. We asked James to describe her music she said : “feelings for empowerment, emotions that are not spoken about normally” she likes to turn her emotions into songs which become natural personal emotions.
She has just released her new single ‘Double edged sword’ a while back and when asked if she was working on anything right now she said she’s always writing and producing things, and has worked on many, many songs along the way but was never happy with them before Double edged sword. So we can definitely be looking forward to what she releases next. As regards to writing music she usually put some thoughts and lyrics down first, whereas strangely ‘Double edged sword’ started by producing the tune first.
The proudest moment for her have been the engagement from her social media followers and people liking her music and she’s “really super grateful for this”. Her first song ‘Turn a blind eye’ has really proved that she could do it and this was also a very proud moment. In five years time she hopes to have a full-time career making music for a living and hopefully playing live shows, especially when we’re allowed to go out again. We can’t wait to see James on the stage! When it comes to advising her younger self. She would tell herself that “not everything has to be perfect” and to “continue and persevere”. Being fairly new to the music industry she hopes to see more women producing and being successful producers within the industry in the future and we couldn’t agree more. We asked the artist how she came up with the name ‘James VII’ as her stage name to which she replied: the name James the seventh came around because of her dad is James VI in her family, so she would be James VII if she were born a boy, and therefore it’s in honour of him, but she very much likes the name James anyway. Lastly her fashion look is all about renaissance as she takes an inspiration from this and the Victorian era, but modernised to fit into todays’ time. She modernises her look a bit with dark fashion but doesn’t have a specific look she strives for. This concluded our interview with James the seventh, we look forward to her new releases, while bopping to ‘Double edged sword’.
