We were lucky enough to have an interview with singer, Devon. We talked about his career so far and what there is to be in the future from him. He got into music in year five but his passion really came on strong in the last year at college when he met his manager. However, in secondary school his passion took a backseat when he felt embarrassed. He felt like he should have liked rugby as that is what the ‘popular’ kids liked and then went back to what he enjoyed; making music. If he could go back 5 years, he would tell himself to carry on with what he loves, this being the only regret in his career he has had. He wonders where he would be now if he had carried on, yet “life goes the way it goes”.
His songs are generally inspired by something that happens, personal topics, or conversations he has had. He also mentioned he has a list of song titles in his notes and then starts off with a that. His music idols are, although he’s on Spotify all the time, Beck, Tyler Joseph, Twenty One Pilots, Damon Albarn and Jon Bellion who Devon believes is a talented artist.
We asked him what five words would he describe his music and he said “erratic”, “indecisive” but “meaningful and personal”. “Omg this is really hard!” he stated not being able to think of anymore, but we think that the only other one could be “brilliant”. Devon has been delighted by the response from his loyal and growing fan base and how they really respect what music puts out and his artistic direction, even when the next music dropped is slightly different, again the response has been really appreciated. Stating he “feels safe to release whatever music he wants with them” [his fans]. Devon is excited about his aims and goals for 2021 especiallly with the industry challenged by Covid with no tours possible at the moment and his headline tour cancelled that was set to go ahead in November. On the other hand, Devon is also much of a “home bird” and really likes is local area of the Forest of Dean, which he carries at the forefront of his music. His goals are to write music for other people, produce a video but also release his next songs. We are glad to know that another single is coming out within the next month hopefully. This new single will be the start to the new era, the start of a bigger project which will become clear towards the end of the year.
His highlights of his career so far would be his TV debut on CBBC or his appearance on the Market Stage at the Truck Festival last year, which was his “biggest crowd I’ve ever played to”.
The advice he would give to any younger artists considering a career in the music industry is be yourself but make sure you can write a song that you are really happy with; and to be harsh on yourself as you don’t get a second chance in this industry, it being “savage”. Also, to “be you” as people make it very a competitive industry.
Devon’s favourite music video of his is for the song “BELONG 2 U” as it was his idea and he never thought he’d get away with it, the video includes him performing this song, and being shot in a really nice place in London.
In five years time Devon still hopes to be making music full-time and having completed lots of projects along with writing songs from other people, getting his name out there. He’d love to be touring Europe and the US and have “an album or two out”.
It was really great for Devon to give up his time to do this interview and we look forward to his new era of music that will be coming to us all very soon.
